DJ is a rescue juvenile Eurasian Jay we are hand rearing.
Jays are loud creatures with an unmistakable call; they sound like they are being murdered. Luckily, DJ hasn’t learned to call so loudly just yet. His current calls are a loud “Mnaaa Mnaaa” at the moment, which indicate he’s hungry and waiting to be fed.
These pictures were taken a week or so ago when he was still livening in the house. He’s now out in his own aviary where he can stretch his wings and learn to land properly without destroying our house by knocking things over or pooping on EVERYTHING.
DJ is our first Jay rescue, however our experience raising other members of the corvid family, including Magnus the magpie, jackdaws, crows and rooks means we are confident with looking after him.
Interesting, his attitude is so, so different to other corvid we have raise: He’s fussy about which food he eats and prefers to keep himself to himself when he’s full. I’m intrigued to see how his personality develops as he matures. For now, it’s a continuous circle of calling, eating, pecking, pooing and investigating.
